BACKGROUND

Uganda Wildlife Research & Training Institute (UWRTI) is a semi-autonomous body under the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, established by Uganda Wildlife Research & Training Institute Act, 2016. The Mandate of UWRTI is: “Undertake research and training services for sustainable conservation and management of Uganda’s wildlife resources.

   Senior Wildlife Research Officer-Ecological Monitoring

Salary Scale:                UWRTI 5 (Sc.)

Reports to:                    Principal Research Officer

Supervises:                   Research Officers

 

Job Purpose:              To assist the Principal Wildlife Research Officer in managing the

                                     Research section and conducting research.

 

Key duties and responsibilities

The senior Wildlife Research Officer is expected to conduct ecological monitoring (Biodiversity inventories including indicators for conservation, Key wildlife species extinction, Species composition and diversity overtime of key species &impacts of buffer zone establishment and management). To achieve this, he /she is expected to:

1.      Develop relevant bankable wildlife research project proposals

2.      Support consultancy for wildlife research and conservation

3.      Support dissemination of research findings

4.      Support collaborative efforts for the uptake of research innovations

5.      Support capacity building of staff in wildlife research

6.      Update the data base on wildlife research

7.      Prepare regular reports on ongoing/completed research projects

8.      Supervise and appraise staff

9.      Any other duties assigned incidental to his/her position

 

PERSON SPECIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications

  1. An honors bachelor degree of science (biological) environmental sciences, wildlife biology, wildlife tourism, natural resource management or related fields from recognized institution.
  2. Master of Science in the above mentioned fields from recognized institution.
  3. Strong knowledge and skills in ecological statistics for the position of Senior Wildlife Research officer-Ecological Monitoring.
  4. Strong knowledge and skills in climate change mitigation for the position of Senior Wildlife Research officer- Climate Change.
  5. At least two relevant peer reviewed publications for either climate change or ecological monitoring respectively.

Working Experience

Should possess progressive relevant working experience of 3 years, three of which should have been gained at Research Officer Level or equivalent from a reputable organization.
